Assess dumped waste before moving it

A pile of fly-tipped material can contain things that are not visible from the outside. Take photographs from a safe distance and explain where the waste is, what you can identify and whether access is restricted. Avoid opening bags or handling unknown containers. The collection needs to be assessed before a routine rubbish removal booking is confirmed.

Confirm who is responsible for the land

For managed property, yards and private access roads, the person instructing clearance should have authority to do so. Keep location details and any relevant records before the material is removed. Public-land fly-tipping should be reported to the responsible council or land manager. A private collection request does not replace an appropriate report where one is needed.

Flag hazards and access restrictions

Mention needles, suspected asbestos, liquids, animal waste and signs of contamination without approaching them. These can change whether a standard collection is suitable. Tell us about vehicle gates, surface conditions and nearby residents or businesses. Once the waste and scope are agreed, arrange a named contact and discuss what collection records or completion photographs you need.
